Drug usage

Belonging to a group of medicines known as Nonsteroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs, Celebrex acts on the hormones that are responsible for inflammation and pain.

How taken

Celebrex has to be taken as per the doctor’s direction. You should never deviate from the prescription. Never take large doses of the medicine or take the drug for longer periods unless asked by your doctor.

The drug can be taken with food or milk to avoid stomach upsets. If there is any problem in swallowing Celebrex, you can take out the granules and take it with some applesauce.

Missed dose/overdose

For better results, never miss any dosage. But if you forget to take a dose of Celebrex, you can take it as soon as you realise it. However, the missed dose should be avoided if it is almost time for your regular dosage. Never compensate for a missed dose.

In case you feel of having taken an overdose, contact the doctor without any delay. Nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, drowsiness, coughing up blood, black or bloody stools, shallow breathing and fainting are some of the symptoms of an overdose.

Before Celebrex is prescribed, it is good to discuss with your doctor about all you allergic reactions and also about your complete medical history. This will help the physician to decide if the drug has to be prescribed and if so about the dosages.

The doctor may not prescribe the Celebrex or he may go for a dosage adjustment if you have any of the following conditions; stroke, heart disease, history of heart attack, blood clot, congestive heart failure, stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, bleeding problems, liver/kidney problems, seizures, asthma, blood clotting disorder and polyps in nose.

Celebrex is rated FDA pregnancy category C, which means it can cause harm to the foetus and also the new born. If you are pregnant or planning to get conceive soon, never take Celebrex. As the drug is traced in breast milk, women who feed their children should discard the drug.

The drug is not prescribed for children below two years of age.

Warnings/precautions

Celebrex should be avoided if you are already using NSAIDs like ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, etodolac, and piroxicam.

Alcohol should be avoided if you are on Celebrex medication as it increases the risk of bleeding.

After taking Celebrex, one should have to avoid sunlight, tanning lamps and sun lamps. Always use some sunscreen lotions when going out.

Side effects

Beware of the allergic reactions like hives, swelling and breathing difficulty while taking Celebrex. Contact the doctor if you come across ay of these allergic reactions.

Some of the serious side effects with Celebrex include: chest pain, slurred speech, weakness, vision problems, black/ bloody stools, vomit looking like coffee grounds, coughing up blood, weight gain, urinating less and nausea.

Some of the less known side effects include stomach upset, diarrhoea, mild heartburn, constipation, gas, dizziness, headache, itching and blurred vision.
